Research facilities

Mallaig Heritage Centre possesses a substantial and growing archive of books, documents, photographs and records relating to all aspects of Mallaig and West Lochaber. Most in demand are the Census records for the parishes of Glenelg (includes Knoydart, Mallaig and Morar), Ardnamurchan (includes South Morar, Arisaig, Lochailort and Moidart) and the Small Isles (Muck, Eigg, Rum and Canna) of which we have copies on microfilm for the years 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901.

We also have a large selection of Ordnance Survey maps of the area and plans of Mallaig railway station and a considerable number of school photographs, from Mallaig, Morar and Arisaig. Details of these can be found in our online catalogue which will become available during 2004, and some of the school photographs can be found online in our find a face pages.

Members of the public who wish to access the Heritage Centre's archives are very welcome to do so, either in person or by contacting us by post, email or telephone.

If you are visiting in person we do recommend advising us in advance of your needs, to enable us to locate and prepare items for you. Between November and March, please check and confirm our opening hours close to the time of your visit. The normal admission fee is payable.

Standard charges for research

As we have very limited staff time, we must make a charge for research requests which require more than half an hour of our staff time. We will advise you in advance if we expect a research charge to be payable and how much we expect it to be.

  • First hour or part hour: £8.00
  • Subsequent half hourly periods: £4.50
