H.M.S. Curacoa / H.M.S Curacoa TV Programme
September 11, 2009, 08:14:34 AM
By chance I recently saw that there was a programme on the History Channel, about the sinking of the Curacoa.( it was called Deep Sea Wrecks) this renewed my interest in this tragedy, my uncle Lt Norman Brittain RNVR was Officer of the Watch that day, and sadly was drowned, his body was subsequently washed up at Loch Ailort, on the west coast of Scotland. the local priest Father Bradle, managed to contact his family who lived in Wales at that time, they were from Dublin, Ireland. My father, (Norman's brother), went up to Loch Ailort, by train, and arranged for him to be buried on the shores of Loch Ailort. As children we used to go by boat, every summer to tidy up the grave, this involved slash hooks and flame thrower, as it was always buried under a mass of bracken, to us children, it was quite an adventure! We had no understanding of what it all meant, we were just told that he had died 'in the war', it was never discussed further than that.
It's just amazing how much information I have found out just by 'Googling' Curacoa! I have had some very interesting feedback, especially from the Anderson family, who have even visited Norman's grave. I would be very interested in hearing from any survivors who might have known my uncle.
